What is Okta?
Okta (prev Auth0) is an identity and access management platform that provides authentication and authorization services for applications, allowing developers to easily integrate security into apps.
During my internship I worked on designing granularly within the attack protection configurations to enable developers to effectively and efficiently protect their users and secure their applications from threats.
Key learnings
During my internship, I learned a lot of great lessons that I'll take with me for the rest of my career. Most notably:
Context is king
Having a clear understanding of the problem area, current roadmap, development workload, and key stakeholders is necessary to produce effective design.
Go wide then narrow
Get as many ideas out as possible before narrowing into one of them. It's easier and faster working in lo-fidelity then having one hi-fidelity mockup you're married to.
Learn the technical side
Every design results in a change that someone has to implement. It's better to get developers involved at the beginning rather then make their life harder at the end.
How to effectively crit
Answer: always provide enough context so feedback is relevant and helpful. By giving helpful context before a critique, you end up getting more relevant insights.
Have a metric in mind
I think that all design changes should be made working towards improving a specific metric. It also makes it easier to test design improvement.
Test everything
You can only predict so much. By putting my designs in front of developers, users and other designers, the final product turned out wildly different than the initial.
